Are you punishing your body without even realising it?
We live in a world that glorifies pushing harder, going further, doing more.
High-impact workouts. Endless cardio. Punishing HIIT classes. We’re told that’s what it takes to “stay fit.”
But here’s the truth: fitness isn’t just about what you can do today. It’s about how you want to live – and move – for the rest of your life.
Are you setting yourself up for long-term health, or forcing your body into something it was never designed for?
It’s so easy to get caught up in the here and now – the number on the scales, the calories burned, the miles clocked up – without stopping to think about the long-term effects.
Would you rather be the runner or cyclist who can’t climb the stairs in your 60s because your joints are wrecked? Or would you rather be like Ernestine Shepherd, who only started weight training in her 50s and is still thriving in her 80s and 90s?
As Ernestine says, “Age is nothing but a number.”
Because it’s not just about moving. It’s about moving in a way that supports and strengthens you, so you can keep doing the things you love… for years to come.
Movement should build you up, not break you down.
Your body is designed to move. But it’s not designed to be punished.
Yet so many of us ignore the niggles, brush off the aches and push through exhaustion… all to hit a target or squeeze in one more workout.
Look at Suzy Eddie Izzard. She ran 27 marathons in 27 days across South Africa for Sports Relief – an incredible feat of endurance. But it came at a serious cost. She ended up in casualty, with doctors fearing a life-threatening kidney condition.
As she later shared: “They were worried it was rhabdomyolysis, which is basically the breakdown of your muscle into your bloodstream – and it can be fatal.”
That’s an extreme example. But the smaller, everyday version happens all the time. We push when we’re tired, ignore the signs and gradually wear ourselves down.
This is where things like yoga, Pilates, strength training and mindful movement come in. They help you become stronger, steadier and more resilient… without wrecking your joints or leaving you drained.
Because honestly, what’s the point of being “fit” right now if it means living in pain later? Wouldn’t you rather rediscover joy in movement, without the fear or pain holding you back?
