Chronic Pain: What actually works? (And why nobody seems to be talking about success rates)
Pain is a normal part of life – we all experience it from time to time. Maybe you’ve pulled a muscle, woken up with a stiff neck or felt sore after a long day on your feet. But chronic pain is different.
Chronic pain lasts for months, even years. It can be exhausting, frustrating and isolating. And when you’re living with it? Well, you’ll try just about anything to find relief.
You might have already tried several treatments – physical therapy, acupuncture, medications, maybe even hypnotherapy – hoping that one will bring you the relief you need.
But here’s something most of us don’t think to ask… How successful are these treatments, really?
Pain relief isn’t always a quick fix. It’s a journey, and results don’t always unfold as we expect. That’s why I encourage you to take a different approach and question everything.
As someone who’s spent years researching pain management, I find success rates fascinating. Not because they provide a guaranteed answer (spoiler: they don’t), but because they show just how varied and personal pain relief can be.
The truth is there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Pain is unique to each of us. We’ve all heard about people having a “high” or “low” pain threshold. But high or low compared to what? There’s no universal scale for pain, no standard test. We all experience it differently. Historically, we’ve put our trust in professionals, handing over control of our bodies, believing they know best. But now, with more information available than ever, it’s time to challenge this. It’s time to make more informed choices about your pain management.
So, what do the numbers say about success rates?
These figures are based on pain reduction, not necessarily elimination. They come from reputable sources like Science Daily, Medical Express and Science Direct.
- Standard physical & exercise therapies: Moderate success, but results improve significantly when tailored to the individual. For example, personalised treatments for chronic back pain have a 38% higher success rate than generic exercise plans.
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT helps people change their pain-related thoughts and behaviours. It’s not a cure, but studies show it can be an effective part of a broader pain management plan.
- Opioids. They can provide substantial pain relief, but the long-term success rate is questionable due to risks of dependency and side effects.
- Non-opioid medications. Things like NSAIDs, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants can work for some pain types. But success rates vary – medications for nociceptive pain have a 13.3% success rate, while those for neuropathic pain are around 7.1%.
- Acupuncture. Some studies suggest it can help with chronic pain, but success depends on the condition being treated.
- Chiropractic & massage therapy. These can provide relief for musculoskeletal pain, but success rates are inconsistent.
- Hypnotherapy. Some people report great results, but research is still catching up.
- Innovative therapies. One of the more promising treatments is Scrambler Therapy, which uses electrical stimulation to “retrain” the brain’s pain signals. It’s non-invasive and has shown 80-90% success rates in some studies.
